Ben’s team had driven down from London in two black BMWs. Smith and Sutcliffe got into one of the vehicles, and Ben and Kate took the other. Reluctantly, Bridget climbed into the back of Ben’s car, and was joined by Jake. She barely had time to fasten her seat belt before Ben was reversing out of the parking space with a sharp turn of the steering wheel and then slamming the gear stick into drive. She felt the contents of her stomach lurch, and gripped the door handle to stop herself being thrown from side to side. Ben had always fancied himself as something of a racing car driver, and Bridget prayed she wasn’t about to bring up the half-digested remains of last night’s meal all over his leather upholstery.

With a marked police car in front and one behind, their blue lights flashing silently, the convoy of vehicles left Kidlington at speed and entered Oxford from the north, hurtling down Woodstock Road, forcing other drivers to pull over into the bus lane and barely avoiding knocking over a cyclist attempting a right-hand turn.

They executed a sharp right into Plantation Road and then headed down Walton Street, right past the Italian bistro where Bridget had dined with Jonathan only the previous evening. Ben’s humiliation of her in front of her team had brought her headache back, and the aching behind her eyes only increased as the car sped down the congested street.

This part of Oxford was far too crowded to be driving in this way. The big BMW was built for cruising along the German autobahn, not careering down the cramped streets of Jericho. She watched through the side window as narrow streets flashed by, packed full of pedestrians and cyclists, and lined with rows of tightly-packed cars along each side. Jericho was a maze of one-way streets, full of parking restrictions, pedestrian crossings and other traffic-calming measures. People stopped to stare as they sped past, and Bridget hung on tightly as the car swerved right into Cranham Street.

The bells of St Barnabas were tolling midday when the cars pulled up outside the new canal-side developments. Bridget breathed a sigh of relief when they arrived. Hopefully Ben and his officers would be able to arrest Hunter without any trouble, and all this macho posturing would be entirely unnecessary.

‘That’s Hunter’s apartment block,’ said Jake, indicating a building close to the church.

Two uniformed officers emerged from the leading police car and approached the entrance of the apartment block. They pushed the buzzer and waited. Bridget watched closely, but there was no response. One of the officers pushed the buzzer again.

‘Could he be out?’ asked Kate.

‘More likely he’s still in bed,’ said Jake. ‘Judging from what I’ve seen of him.’

‘I hope he hasn’t received a tip-off,’ growled Ben.

As they watched, Jake suddenly pointed again. A motorbike had appeared from around the rear of the apartments. A man in black leathers was driving it, with a young woman riding passenger on the back. Her long red hair streamed out from beneath her helmet.
